MISSION AND GOALS

Introduction of the Research Center for Environmental Safety

The establishment of the Research Center for Environmental Safety (RCES) of Yamaguchi University was authorized formally by Graduate School of Science and Technology on January 2008. The mission is to build up rational and worldwide framework for a sustainable civil society. The lifetime management for infrastructure as an environmental-friendly system is becoming one of the most important issues in safety and secure civil societies. The management of infrastructure should be carefully carried out to the next generation not only in advanced countries but also in developing countries and regions. The issue noted above is a challenge for transdisciplinary expertise through a collaboration of a variety of science and technology researchers. The RCES consists of three divisions as follows.

Division of Civil Infrastructure Management

The goals are to develop an integrated lifetime management system for infrastructure by combining with the latest innovative information and communication technologies (ICT), to emerge intelligent health monitoring techniques, and to educate experts for maintenance, we call “Infra-Doctor”.

Division of Applied and Environmental Science

The subdivision of “Utilization of Biological Functions” is aimed to prevent and restore various damages in the ecosystem mainly due to Architectural/ Engineering/ Construction (AEC) deployments. The global warming and other environmental issues are also taken into account. The key technology is the reinforcement of tiny creatures by enhancing their given characteristics.

The subdivision of “Membrane Science and Engineering” is aimed to apply nano-structured molecular sieve membranes to environmental reserve areas and future energy harvest.

Division for Visiting Researchers

The collaboration with a variety of expertise from all over the world.
